Colonic Transposition

Following accidental or intentional swallowing of toilet cleaners or acids, the upper food pipe gets damaged resulting in narrowing or stricture formation which if left untreated may lead to formation of cancers in the future life. Patients are unable to swallow food and keep losing weight. Initially treated with endoscopic dilatation but eventually most patient need bypass of the food pipe with alternative route to eat and sustain life. Surgery aims to prepare part of intestine (colon or the stomach) as a tube, and take it to the neck though creating space under the chest. The neo tube is then joined to the upper healthy food pipe in the neck. It is a lengthy procedure takes around 5 hours to complete. Patients are kept in ICU days for recovery and stays in hospital for 7 to 10 days. Following complete recovery the patient can have normal swallowing and can eat normally.
